Community Outreach for Educational Change (COEC) Bridges Digital Divide in Southern Kaduna with ICT Training for Rural Teachers

Southern Kaduna, Nigeria – [June 30, 2025]

In a strategic move to address the digital divide in rural education, Community Outreach for Educational Change (COEC) has successfully conducted an intensive ICT training program for teachers across nine partner schools in Southern Kaduna under the Liberated Girl (TLG) Project.

The initiative was born out of the urgent need to equip rural educators with the digital tools and skills necessary to improve teaching delivery and ensure learners — especially girls — are not left behind in the digital age.

“The gap in ICT literacy among rural teachers has long hindered innovation in classrooms and limited students' potential,” said the Executive Director of COEC. “This training marks a significant step in our commitment to providing quality, inclusive education in underserved communities.”

The training covered practical skills in digital literacy, integrating technology into classroom instruction, using online resources, and leveraging simple tech tools for student engagement and lesson planning. Teachers who once had little or no ICT exposure are now better positioned to bring digital learning into their classrooms.

Empowering Teachers to Empower Learners

The impact of the training is already being felt across the participating schools. Many teachers shared how the experience transformed their approach to teaching, boosting their confidence and creativity. This in turn is expected to improve learning outcomes among students — particularly the TLG girls, who often face additional barriers in accessing education and technology.

More Work Ahead

While this milestone is worth celebrating, COEC acknowledges that sustained progress will require:

  • Continuous ICT training and mentorship for educators

  • Provision of digital infrastructure such as laptops, projectors, and solar-powered internet solutions

  • Greater community and parental engagement in supporting digital education

  • Advocacy for ICT integration in rural school curricula

“We are not just training teachers; we are transforming classrooms and redefining what is possible for rural learners,” the Executive Director added.
